Podium Index

The current leaderboard of American coffee roasters, ranked by competition performance.

The Podium Index is our answer to a simple question: which American coffee roasters are actually the best right now?

"Best" is a slippery word in specialty coffee. Every roaster has a story, every bag has a label, and every brand has someone willing to call it world-class. We wanted something harder than marketing — a way to measure roasting craft against the best standard to hold up under scrutiny: blind, expert evaluation by other professionals. So we built the Podium Index around the competitions where roasters put their work on the line in front of judges.

The Podium Index tracks results from the competitions that matter most in the US specialty scene: the US Coffee Championships (Roasting), Golden Bean The Americas, the Golden Bean World Series, the Good Food Awards, the Global Coffee Awards. Between them, these contests cover thousands of entries each year and represent the deepest, most credible pool of judged roasting work on the continent. A win at any one of them is a serious achievement. Stack up wins across several, and you're doing something rare.

Each roaster's score is a composite built from their podium finishes — first, second, and third place — across those competitions, along with Good Food Awards winners. Not every competition carries the same weight. Some are larger and more competitive than others, and the Podium Index reflects that. We don't publish the exact formula because the point isn't the spreadsheet — the point is the signal. The roasters that rise to the top of the Podium Index are doing extraordinary work.

Podium Index favors recent excellence over historical reputation. A win this year counts fully. A win from a few years ago counts for less. This isn't disrespect to legacy roasters; it's an acknowledgement that coffee is a perishable craft. Green buyers change. Head roasters move on. Equipment gets replaced. The roaster that was untouchable in 2018 might be coasting in 2025, and the roaster nobody had heard of three years ago might create the most exciting coffee you'll drink this year. Recency keeps the Podium Index honest.

This is also why the Podium Index updates regularly. As new competition results come in, scores shift. Roasters climb. Roasters fall. The leaderboard you're looking at is a snapshot of who's operating at the highest level right now, not a hall of fame.

Podium Coffee Club exists to ship coffee from the roasters whose work has been validated, repeatedly, by the people best qualified to judge it. When you subscribe to Podium Coffee Club, you're not getting whatever's trending on Instagram. You're getting coffee from the most-awarded roasters in the country, full stop. That's the entire promise.

If you're new to the world of curated coffee and want to see how Podium stacks up against the field, we've put together a broader guide to the best coffee subscriptions worth knowing about. But if you've read this far, you probably already know what you're looking for: coffee chosen by results, not hype.

The Podium Index tells you who the best roasters in America are. A Podium subscription puts these coffees in your home.
